Why You Should Back Up Data To The Cloud | Xuper | News

The importance of backing up your data to the cloud

Businesses rely heavily on technology to function efficiently, and the majority of vital company data is stored on various devices (PC’s, Laptops, phones etc). However, only storing these files in one place is a huge risk. With constant cyber-threats and human error posing a threat to your data, you’re leaving your company very vulnerable to permanent data loss by not taking the steps to back up your devices.

According to research by the Cloud Industry Forum, in 2017 the overall cloud adoption rate in the UK now stands at 88%, with 67% expecting to increase their adoption of cloud services over the coming year.

There are many ways data and files can unexpectedly be lost:

Viruses – A computer virus is a type of malicious malware that can corrupt files and lead to data loss.

Ransomware – Ransomware attacks are becoming increasingly common and pose a huge threat your data and files. Ransomware is a malicious software that takes over and encrypts/blocks access to your data and files. The attacker will usually demand a payment and threaten to publish or permanently delete your files if you do not meet their demands.

Hard drive failure – A sudden, unexpected computer crash or failure of the hard drive can lead to the loss of months, or even years, of irreplaceable data and can be catastrophic for a business.

Physical computer damage – What if you drop and smash your laptop? Spill a drink all over it? A flood or fire occurs? Your devices are always vulnerable to human error and physical damage which could result in permanent loss of data.

Theft or loss of computer – If you lose your device or it is stolen, your company data could be permanently lost or end up the wrong hands (this would also be considered a data breach under GDPR and could result in huge fines for your company).

Why you should back up your data to the cloud

The cloud is one of the most secure and reliable ways to back-up your data and files, no longer do you have to worry about computer damage, or hard drive failure – you can simply access your files stored in the cloud on a different device!

The benefits of cloud back up include:

  • Do you have to travel for work? Cloud enhances your flexible and remote working abilities by making your files available to you wherever you are, on any device.

  • Despite security being one of the main concerns of moving to the cloud, it’s actually one of the most secure ways to store your data and files. Virus or ransomware attack on your device? You have peace of mind those files are also stored in the cloud, lose your laptop? You can wipe data remotely. Your updates also run automatically, so it’s another thing you don’t have to think about.

  • Disaster recovery is a necessity for all businesses. Whether you’re victim to a virus, cyber-attack, computer damage, or theft, with cloud back up you always have that peace of mind your data and files aren’t permanently lost.

  • Cloud improves employee collaboration by allowing your staff to access their work from anywhere, and work together, remotely, on documents, presentations etc.

  • Cloud-based networks don’t have physical restrictions on storage. Some services may offer you a certain amount of storage but this usually can be increased quickly and easily at a reasonable price. (Much cheaper than buying additional hardware).
